All You Need To Know About Jack Russell Terriers

jack russell terrier

The Jack Russell terrier is a small breed of dog with a muscular and compact body.  It is important that you know about the traits a Jack Russell before you buy a puppy.  Knowing the traits of the dog breed will help you determine whether or not they are the right dog for you.

The Size

The Jack Russell Terrier Club of America has a standard height for this breed of 10 to 15 inches.  However, the AKC has a height standard of 12 to 14 inches.   JRTCA divides the breed into two different height standards of 10 to 12.5 inches and 12.5 to 15 inches.  The most common height for this breed for females is 13 inches and for males is 14 inches.

In terms of weight, both genders will weigh between 13 to 17 pounds.  This is the healthy weight of this breed, but it could vary depending on the diet you provide the dog.

The Coat

It is important that you know about the coat of the dog breed because some people are able to cope with the maintenance of long coats whiles others are not.  There are 3 different coat types when looking at Jack Russell terriers and they are the smooth, broken and rough which is coarse and longer than average.  The coat for this breed is usually short unless you have bought a rough coat puppy.

The coats are considered to be double coats making them very flat and hard.  The colors are generally white or white with black or tan markings.  AS the coat is short and flat it has a low grooming rating which is ideal for people with limited time to groom their pet.

What The Breed Was For

Historically the Jack Russell terrier was bred as a hunting dog.  The most common type of hunting this breed was used for was fox hunting.  This means that the hunting instinct is bred into the dog and training will not be able to completely eliminate this.  This also means that other pets such as cats and hamsters will be considered prey for the hunting instinct.

Expectations With The Breed

If you have a Jack Russell terrier you should expect to exercise the dog for at least 40 minutes a day.  More exercise may be needed per day if the dog does not have sufficient space to run while you are out.  These are very energetic dogs and you need to be able to cope with this.

Jack Russell terriers have a life expectancy of between 13 to 15 years.  There are a number of medical conditions that this breed could suffer from, but overall they are considered to be a very healthy breed of dog.  The most common health problems are hereditary and should not be a problem is you buy your dog from a good breeder.

Jack Russell terriers do not tend to drool or snore making them a clean dog to have.  However, they do have a high tendency to dig and are known to bark.  They have moderate social needs.

Breed Personality

Most Jack Russell terriers are energetic and happy dogs.  These dogs often have a strong desire to work which comes from being bred for hunting.  It is easy to keep your dog happy by giving them something to do and a companion to do activities with.

It is imperative that you complete training with your Jack Russell terrier.  While the training will not completely control the hunting instinct it will subdue it to a manageable level.  Training will also help with the digging which is normal for this breed.  It is important to note that Jack Russell terriers are a strong willed breed and it is unlikely that you will win in a battle of wills.

The vocal nature of the breed comes from the fact that it is a baying terrier.  They make good watch dogs and are very alert.  Jack Russell terriers are assertive dogs making them poor choices for homes with young children or other animals.  In some cases, this breed has been known to be aggressive toward other dogs.

Living With A Jack Russell Terrier

The breed personality of the Jack Russell terrier means that this breed is not the best option for everyone.  As these animals instinctively view certain animals as prey you cannot have small animals in the home with the dog.  However, if you buy the dog as a puppy you may be able to train the dog to get along with other animals, but this is not guaranteed.

If you choose a Jack Russell terrier it is recommended that you have a large fenced garden for them to run around in.  This is due to the high energy levels of this breed and that fact that they do need a lot of exercise. While it is recommended that you complete 40 minutes of exercise a day with them, they will need more if they cannot run.   ikes or playing a long game of fetch.  If you are looking for a dog that will sit indoors with you then a Jack Russell terrier is not the breed to choose.

The Jack Russell terrier breed is recognized by the AKC and this has resulted in 2 national associations being formed.  These associations are the Jack Russell Terrier Club and the Jack Russell Terrier Association of America.

Jack Russell terriers that are kept indoors need to have daily walks.  This breed will also be ideal for taking on hikes or playing a long game of fetch.  If you are looking for a dog that will sit indoors with you then a Jack Russell terrier is not the breed to choose.
