What
can I do to help?
You can help
Genetic Research by supporting the UC Davis Jack Russell Terrier
Genetic Study. The study is working on identifying the gene or
genes that are responsible for juvenile cataracts and Primary
Lens Luxation, two potentially dibilitating genetic diseases.
Read about one terrier's cataract progression.
The goal of the study is to develop a test for the gene. Free
cheek swab kits are available from the UC
Davis web site or contact
us to send you a kit. It is easy to participate and help make
a healthier breed for the future.
"Can
you imagine? It's only a matter of time before somatic gene therapy
is available for dogs. In this procedure a normal gene is inserted
into a cell to compensate for a defective gene. In the future,
treatment for cancer or eye disease might not entail either surgery
or chemotherapy, but rather administering nosedrops containing
the necessary normal gene."
