Tips
If you
want to train for GTG get some long thin carpet boxes to simulate
the 9" by 9" competition tunnels called "liners".
Start with a short 3 foot long box, then get longer. Then put two
boxes together and make a 90 degree turn in it. Hold a treat at one
end while your dog is held at the other end. Be careful not to force
or scare the dog, as they may not give you a second chance if they
do not like the situation. Don't let the terrier get the treat unless
he/she crawls through the box. You can also do this with corrugated
irrigation/drainage pipe with the bottom quarter cut off so that the
terrier is running on dirt. The competition tunnels are dark, so you'll
want to try to simulate the competition environment the best you can.
You can get the dog to go faster by exciting him/her before letting
her go. I call this "jeeping the dog up". The best incentive in the
terrier's mind is a live rat. In competition the rat will be in a
cage and protected by bars at the end of the tunnel. Your dog will
need to bark or bay at the rat for 30 seconds to a minute to pass
the test as a true baying terrier.
